Petra Mar\u010dinko was unable to reach the final. Although Croatia no longer has any representatives left in the tournament, fans can look forward to a spectacular show in both the semifinals and the final. <\/p>\n\n

Once again this year, WTA Makarska Open director Feliks Lukas will see his dream of a Croatian player winning the tournament go unfulfilled. The last remaining Croatian in the draw, Petra Mar\u010dinko, was unable to get the better of Andorra’s Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. The first set didn’t go her way, and in the second there were brief signs she might take the lead \u2014 but Kasintseva ultimately prevailed 6:2, 6:3. <\/p>\n\n

“It was pretty intense \u2014 I was just that little bit short of finding my way back into the match. I had plenty of chances, but she really played well. I’m used to the sun, but I haven’t played in heat like this for a long time, so I simply wasn’t physically up to it. The heat got to me. That said, given my current form, this has been my best tournament in the last six months, so I have no reason to be sad. But I can’t be happy when I lose either,” said Mar\u010dinko after missing out on a semifinal spot that would have delighted director Lukas. <\/p>\n\n

Reaching the quarterfinals is still a tremendous result for young Petra. She swept past third seed Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in the second round, and that remains her favourite victory of the year so far. <\/p>\n\n

“I’m not giving up on my dream. I’m certain that a Croatian player will win our tournament soon \u2014 perhaps as early as next year, when we will be celebrating 20 years of WTA tennis in Croatia, ten of them under our organisation,” said Lukas. <\/p>\n\n

Egypt’s Mayar Sherif also had an off day, going down 2:6, 4:6 to Czech Sara Bejlek, while Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja was beaten by top seed Australian Maya Joint 2:6, 2:6. <\/p>\n\n

In the most thrilling quarterfinal match, Serbian tennis player Lola Radivojevi\u0107 defeated experienced German Mona Barthel 3:6, 7:5, 6:4.<\/p>\n\n

Although Croatia no longer has any players left in the WTA Makarska Open hosted by Valamar, fans at the Tennis Centre can look forward to a spectacular show at both the semifinals and the final. The first semifinal is scheduled for 3 PM, the second for 6 PM, followed by a concert by Giuliano. Ahead of Sunday’s final, there will be an exhibition match featuring \u0160ime Elez and Milo\u0161 Mi\u0107ovi\u0107 from the show Gospodin Savr\u0161eni (The Bachelor), with Frajle performing after the trophy ceremony. The semifinals and final will be broadcast on Tennis Channel and HRT. Now we just need the organisers to reveal who the surprise guest at the final will be! <\/p>\n\n
